Deep-water east-coast port, Nepal's fast-growing alternative to Kolkata.
Visakhapatnam (Vizag) is a deep-water port on India's east coast that was opened to Nepal's transit cargo (operational from 2018) specifically as an alternative to congested Kolkata. It takes bigger ships and offers direct container block-train service on the broad-gauge network toward the Nepal border.
Though farther from Nepal than Kolkata, Vizag's deeper draft, larger-vessel calls and more reliable rail have made it a fast-growing choice for Nepal's containerized imports — particularly bulkier and Far-East-origin cargo that benefits from fewer transshipments and less port dwell.
Inland leg to Birgunj ICD: ~1,400 km · ~4–7 days (after port release). Mode: Container block trains (rail).
